CANADA CALLING
#485 Friday July 10, 2009

Last year the former front man for THE HEADSTONES reinvented himself right before
our eyes. DILLON who toured back and forth across Canada for a number of years
with his band, failed to click with that big radio hit. Often lauded for their
electrifying show, the band eventually dissolved into a pile of acrimony and
drug abuse problems, in particular DILLON himself. Fast forward to last year
when DILLON found himself with the lead in a summer replacement show called
DURHAM COUNTY. The rather dark and foreboding script resonated with viewers
in search of anything other than DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER and CSI re-runs. Based
on DURHAM COUNTY’S success and his performances, DILLON was picked to
star in the co-production between Canadian and American networks of FLASHPOINT.
I personally got hooked on DURHAM COUNTY and made it a not to be missed show
in my limited television grid. Well DILLON is back on at least two fronts. On
Monday @ 8 p.m. season two of DURHAM COUNTY returns to T.V. DILLON also recently
signed a new record contract with Warner’s Music Canada. Expect the new
album in the Fall.

Default
DEFAULT looks to be finally crawling from the career wreckage caused by the
demise of the record label going bankrupt. The local rockers who’s members
turn up frequently in the local watering holes, has just released the first
single from their forthcoming album. The band will do selective dates around
Canada is summer as they prepare to release their new album in September.
Is DANIEL WESLEY going to make a return visit to White Rock for our annual sea
festival? Stay tuned.

JOEL PLASKETT one of the headliners for next weekend’s FUSION Festival
in Surrey got the phone call yesterday that most musicians would die for. PLASKETT
has been booked to open for SIR PAUL MCARTNEY’S show tomorrow (Saturday)
in Halifax. It is the only North American show for McArtney this summer. The
outdoor concert is expected to draw thousands to downtown Halifax. Bravo Joel.
PLASKETT headlines the free FUSION FEST show in Holland Park in downtown Whalley
next Saturday.
Congratulations to GOODBYE BEATDOWN (formerly Critical Element) on making it
into the Top 3 bands this year in the CFOX Seeds competition. The annually homegrown
music contest is now in its 30th year. Previous winners like BIF NAKED, KICK
AXE, THEORY OF A DEADMAN, NICKELBACk, MATT GOOD and the aforementioned DEFAULT
& DANIEL WESLEY have all benefited immensely from the exposure afforded
them from their wins. GOODBYE BEATDOWN & WESLEY both have recorded locally
at TURTLE STUDIOS in White Rock.
